Dimensions: 25" high / 6" diameter organic shape base
The King's Message is part of a special Dream Series*. Made with a rare natural colored Chambreyonia Palm sheath, the texture has deep, interesting recesses, which are a signature of this variety of palm. It is magical to the touch. Stitched with waxed linen, and hand stamped with Shelley's special "lava (or 'āina) stamp" that she made by using a negative impression of her own rock wall. She loves using script in her artwork to help perpetuate this declining form of communication, and has hand scripted the famous Hawaiian phrase (the King's message - Ua Mau ke Ea o ka ʻĀina i ka Pono) around the base. The cross hatch design was created with another special stamp of palm sheath fiber.
The piece is completed with a rare focal piece of rough Peridot, aka Olivine, one of the first minerals to crystallize from magma. This is what Hawaii's green sand beach is made of. (This piece of rough Peridot is not from this island.) A hand rubbed polyurethane finish coats the entire piece for protection and durability.
*Dream Series: The piece comes with the full page story of Shelley's dream where she was visited by Kauikeaouli (King Kamehameha III) who (in her dream) gave permission to use the phrase he first spoke to his people in 1843, reminding them to do right by the land. It is now our state motto and part of many songs. The phrase "Ua Mau ke Ea o ka ʻĀina i ka Pono" means "the life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness (or doing the right thing)."
What better way to share the King's message than on a physical piece of the island he was born on?
Like all of Shelley's creations, this is a one of a kind piece that cannot be duplicated; it is literally a piece of Hawaiʻi Island. Each sheath is sustainably harvested from natural fallen leaves from beautiful, giant palm trees (about 10 different varieties). A wonderful way to remember your island experience or bring the warmth of the tropics into everyday life. #takehawaiihome
