Kuahu means "altar" in Hawaiian.
A statement piece reminiscent of a sacred tree trunk on a base of Hawaiian Koa wood. This vessel was created from a single natural colored Alexander Palm sheath, sculpted while wet, the organic form emerged in the drying process. Embellished with gold leafing, leather bottom trim and a hand rubbed polyurethane finish.
The addition of dried branches brings the tree form to life. The clear space next to the vessel can bring a sense of peaceful minimalism if left empty, or one could use it to place special items for the day. A found leaf or stone, a statue, or even a photograph. This encourages the viewer to actively participate in the feeling of this powerful piece.
Like all of Shelley's creations, this is a one of a kind piece that cannot be duplicated; it is literally a piece of Hawaiʻi Island. Each sheath is sustainably harvested from natural fallen leaves from beautiful, giant palm trees (about 10 different varieties). A wonderful way to remember your island experience or bring the warmth of the tropics into everyday life. #takehawaiihome
