Kai means ocean or sea in Hawaiian. Inspired by the beautiful blue Pacific water that can be seen from the studio windows, in addition to the fact that blue and brown go so nicely together.
Created from a single Alexander Palm sheath, hand formed and hand stitched with waxed linen. The wave design was added to the hand made paper that runs across the bottom, and the basket is fully lined with 100% cottom Batik ocean inspired print.
This is a very useful size of basket shape. With the wide opening at the top, it would work great to corral all sorts of supplies, daily mail, a fruit basket, serving your favorite chips or bread, rolled up towels or plants. No limit to its usefulness.
Like all of Shelley's creations, this is a one of a kind piece that cannot be duplicated; it is literally a piece of Hawaiʻi Island. Each sheath is sustainably harvested from natural fallen leaves from beautiful, giant palm trees (about 10 different varieties). A wonderful way to remember your island experience or bring the warmth of the tropics into everyday life. #takehawaiihome
