Umeke means "bowl" in Hawaiian. Made from a single fallen Pinanga Caesia* palm sheath, the color is natural and the shape has been encouraged. When this beautiful palm drops a leaf, the sheath resembles a bowl shape, but there is a lot of magic required to accomplish the retention of this natural organic shape.
The deep ridges and rich color beg to be touched. The piece has a round wood base, that is mostly unseen, but provides stable footing. Perfect for a counter or dining table, use it as a fruit bowl or to serve dry food. Try filling it with bright lemons for a beautiful contrast. It would also work great for an entry table.
Completed with a museum quality encaustic wax finish (an ancient preservation process using beeswax and Damar tree resin that fuses into the plant fibers when heated). It can be buffed to a shine or left to a matte finish.
The Umeke vessel is a perfect gift for weddings and special occasions. You can commission a customized one with modifications to shape and the addition of colors (see image). Prices will vary based on customization. Shop early and allow 4 to 6 weeks for commissioned pieces.
*Pinanga Caesia palms have a gorgeous pink flower (see image) and I have added the red arrow to show what the sheath looks like, while the leaf is still attached.
Like all of Shelley's creations, this is a one of a kind piece that cannot be duplicated; it is literally a piece of Hawaiʻi Island. Each sheath is sustainably harvested from natural fallen leaves from beautiful, giant palm trees (about 10 different varieties). A wonderful way to remember your island experience or bring the warmth of the tropics into everyday life. #takehawaiihome
