When giving directions in Hawaii, you quickly learn to navigate based on the natural landscape, up mauka means up the mountain, on the makai side means on the ocean side. When you go up mauka in Hawaii, you will be in rural coffee country or in lush forests with different flora and fauna. It's a laid back feeling, cool and green, full of quiet afternoons and lots of bird songs. That's the feeling Shelley wanted this piece to not only convey to the viewer, but to also bring the "up mauka" vibe to any room or decor.
This large basket sculpture is created from a single (but giant!) Alexander Palm sheath and hand stitched with waxed linen. The top is trimmed with distressed leather. The focal on the front is created from a Hawaiian Axis deer antler, local wild Turkey feathers, dyed and natural Ringneck feathers, Royal Pheasant feathers and dried Sago palm flowers.
Like all of Shelley's creations, this is a one of a kind piece that cannot be duplicated; it is literally a piece of Hawaiʻi Island. Each sheath is sustainably harvested from natural fallen leaves from beautiful, giant palm trees (about 10 different varieties). A wonderful way to remember your island experience or bring the warmth of the tropics into everyday life. #takehawaiihome
