This precious little basket is named for the Hawaiian word for "peacock", and is more commonly known as the word for "jasmine". Created from a smaller Alexander Palm sheath, hand formed and stitched with blue waxed linen. Trimmed around the top with hand-made paper, and a polished silver Mother of Pearl shell embellished with paint. The peacock image on the front was created from a hand-carved Indonesian stamp on hand-made paper.
As is the nature of the material Shelley works with, the material contracts while it dries. Surprises always happen and the shape of the bottom created an opportunity to stabilize it with a little piece of Hawaiian seashell that has been sand washed smooth. It's a reminder that we all need a little help sometimes.
Like all of Shelley's creations, this is a one of a kind piece that cannot be duplicated; it is literally a piece of Hawaiʻi Island. Each sheath is sustainably harvested from natural fallen leaves from beautiful, giant palm trees (about 10 different varieties). A wonderful way to remember your island experience or bring the warmth of the tropics into everyday life. #takehawaiihome
